COLLEEN M. ROLLINS
ARTIST'S STATEMENTI believe animals have souls, that each is a unique individual. In the animal portraits that comprise my latest body of work I have attempted to capture each subject’s personality. The result is a collection of animals rendered in acrylic with backgrounds of vintage maps, bingo cards, children’s game boards, book pages, and even grocery receipts.
Each of the paintings, save one, is based on photographs I have taken. Sometimes the photo inspires the background, other times I find the vintage paper and try to figure out exactly which animal would work with that background. Each piece has a story. You may feel a connection to a particular piece. A broken beak resembling a broken nose…a flamboyant rooster evoking memories of a bad-boy in your distant or not-so-distant past…or a curly haired sheep reminding you of your college years and all of that leather…If you feel a connection, if my work evokes a smile, then I have achieved my aim. |
